Norwegian Lutheran Church of America (Evangelical Lutheran Church), 1917-1960

The Norwegian Lutheran Church of America was formed by the merger of the Hauge Synod, the Norwegian Synod, and the United Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. In 1946, they changed the name to the Evangelical Lutheran Church as part of the “Americanization” process. By the 1960s, Lutheran churches of German and Danish backgrounds joined together to form the American Lutheran Church. Presidents of the Evangelical Lutheran Church included Hans Gerhard Stub (1917-1925), Johan Arnd Aasgaard (1925-1954), and Fredrik A. Schiotz (1954-1960).
