Anti-Missourian Brotherhood, 1887-1890

The Anti-Missourian Brotherhood is a short-lived group that separated from the Norwegian Synod at the annual meeting in Stoughton, Wisconsin, in 1887. They left the Norwegian Synod due to the Predestination Controversy. Those opposed included Bernt J. Muus, John N. Kildahl, Thorbjorn Mohn, and Marcus Bockman. They established their seminary at St. Olaf College, where it stayed until it was moved in 1890.  A few years after they formed, they merged into the United Lutheran Church of America.

What was the predestination controversy? Simply put, the saving grace of man depends on some degree of action or decision by the man to accept the gift. The Norwegian Synod pastors agreed with the Missouri Synod's view that if a man does nothing at all, salvation is not by grace alone.
