Hauge Synod, 1876-1917

The Hauge Synod, formally known as Hauge’s Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Synod in America, was formed in 1876 after a split from the Eielsen Synod. The split came over the discussions of the old constitution and the new, with Eielsen favoring the old. The synod was named after Hans Nielsen Hauge since the church de-emphasized formal worship and stressed personal faith in the Haugean tradition.

The Hauge Synod established a seminary in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1879. Following the merger of the Hauge Synod with the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America in 1917, Red Wing Seminary continued as an academy and junior college for the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. By 1932, the Red Wing school merged with St. Olaf College.
