A portion of the Norwegian Synod was reorganized as the Norwegian Synod of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church (“Little Norwegian Synod”). The name was later changed to the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The first president was Bjug Harstad – a founding president of Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington. In 1927, the synod formed the Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota. In 1946, they also established a seminary called Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary.
