Luther Seminary, 1917-current

The Founding of Luther Seminary

The roots for Luther Seminary start with the Augsburg Theological Seminary in Marshall, Wisconsin. When the Augsburg Seminary and Luther Theological Seminary joined in 1963, they used the founding date of the Augsburg Seminary of 1869.

In 1917 with the formation of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America, three church seminaries merged. This included Norwegian Synod-operated Luther Seminary near Hamline, Hauge Synod-operated Red Wing Seminary, and United Church Seminary (portion at the present site of Luther Seminary). When they joined together, they renamed themselves to Luther Theological Seminary.  Two other mergers happened. One in 1963 when Augsburg Seminary joined Luther Theological Seminary. The next was in 1982 when Luther Theological Seminary and Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary began merging. After the last merger, the seminary was known as Luther Seminary.

Luther Seminary Today

Today, Luther Seminary is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is the largest seminary of the ELCA. Luther Seminary’s mission today is to “educate leaders for Christian communities called and sent by the Holy Spirit to witness to salvation through Jesus Christ and to serve in God’s world.”
