Gro Svendson Frontier Mother: Thoughts on Threads from Hallingdal to Estherville
In 1862, twenty-one year old Gro Svendsen set out from Hallingdal, Norway, on a transatlantic journey that would take her to Estherville, Iowa. This migration was not one of just people, but of things: textiles, clothing, books, and other belongings that carried the weight of her home, her memories, and her survival.
Her letters, preserved in the archives and compiled in the NAHA publication, Frontier Mother, reveal the vital importance of these material objects in creating her new life on the American frontier. Gro cautioned immigrants not to sell all of their clothes before leaving Norway, reminding them that “no one should sell all of their clothes… everything in Norway is useful here,” she noted that Norwegian clothing was warmer and of much better quality than that of the cotton goods that could be found in America.
Gro also encouraged immigrants to bring books despite the lower quality of print in America. She wrote, “By all means, bring some books! To be sure, there are books enough, such as they are, to be had here, but the print is poor, by no means as good as the print in Norway.” Books, like clothing, provided her the comfort and connection to home amid the challenges of frontier life.
Her letters recount the harsh realities of migration as well. She witnessed the rough handling of belongings during the voyage and told of a poor family’s chest being thrown open, their possessions lost to the sea. Gro also reflected on the health of immigrants in America, noting, “People are not so strong and healthy as in Norway, whatever the reasons may be. You will have to draw your own conclusion.” Highlighting the roll that frontier life often took on settlers.
Despite these hardships, Gro maintained ties to Norwegian traditions. Her son Little Ole remembered her playing her alpenhorn, an instrument whose sound echoed across the Estherville prairies, reminding everyone of their heritage. Family stories preserved in the archives add depth to Gro’s journey. Her last letter home is preserved in the Ole Nilsen Files, and in What Became of Little Ole, Olga Nilsen Berglund writes about her father Ole’s difficult journey across the prairie and his later life near Gro’s family.
One touching detail illustrates the enduring connection to their homeland: after retiring, Gro's brother, Ole Nilsen moved to Grand Forks, close to where Gro’s family had settled after her death. Although he was 76 and lived just ten blocks from the city center, Ole would regularly walk a considerable distance to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, simply to have his shoes repaired by a shoemaker from Hallingdal. A fellow Norwegian.
Gro Svendsen’s story illustrates how immigrants used material culture such as clothing, books, music, and everyday objects to survive, remember, and recreate a sense of home in a new land. Through her letters and family memories, we gain insight into the strength and resilience that were woven into the fabric of their lives.
