Claire Selkurt’s pioneering research into Norwegian-American frontier architecture highlights how immigrant traditions were both preserved and transformed in the American Midwest. Her work focused on early Norwegian settlements like Wisconsin’s Luther Valley, where architecture and material culture became quiet but powerful markers of identity in a new land.

Drawing from correspondences, fieldwork, and immigrant testimony, Selkurt examined how necessity, environment, and available materials shaped the homes and crafts of early settlers. While traditions like rosemaling and beer brewing faded due to time constraints (and lack of barley), domestic architecture, particularly log cabins and vernacular stone homes, retained their distinct Scandinavian features.

From central hearths, evolving into corner fireplaces, to timber construction, dovetail joinery, and sod roofs, Selkurt documented how settlers adapted familiar forms to their new conditions. Her research explores the nuanced process of cultural translation, showing how immigrants balanced the demands of survival with a desire to preserve their heritage.

  Cultural Changes and Native Influence

"There were always reasons why Norwegian words were dropped in favor of English ones, and why some were never dropped. The same I am sure holds true for material culture…” -Dr. Lloyd Hustvedt, Professor of Norwegian at St. Olaf, to Claire Selkurt, 1972

Claire Selkurt was interested in what Hustvedt called the “subtle influences” of cultural change. Just as language evolved on the frontier, so too did architecture, tools, and craft. Norwegian immigrants found themselves in a landscape full of possibility, but barren of many familiar materials. Some folk artists continued their crafts when possible; others set them aside altogether, waiting for a time when their skills might once again be useful.

Architecture as Identity: Brauch and Belonging

"The tyranny of traditional ideas was often cast off, but Norwegian settlers brought their “brauch” - native tradition- and added a subtle twist.” -Sybil Moholy-Nagy

Norwegian settlers didn’t simply recreate their homeland on American soil. Instead they practiced what German architectural historian, Sybil Moholy-Nagy described as “brauch,” or the adaptation of native tradition into new, functional, and locally relevant forms. This was especially evident in the domestic architecture of early settlements like Luther Valley (1840-1880). Expediency was key: homes had to be built quickly, with whatever materials were available. While the homes were built hastily, cultural memory remained relevant.

Many of these settlers came from the bondestand—a rural peasant class in Norway known for being deeply rooted in tradition. Their desire to preserve cultural identity, combined with Norway’s rich woodworking and building customs, meant that even under pressure, traditional forms and techniques endured. Though homes were built quickly and simply, they reflected familiar forms. Settlers used techniques like dovetail joinery, often placed homes near water and faced them east, echoing customs from Norway. The center hearth gave way to the corner fireplaces that were adapted for chimney use. Farm layouts compressed the traditional courtyard model, but still followed the logic of function; outbuildings doubled as spaces for food preservation, soap making, and other seasonal labor, just as they had in Norway.

For Claire Selkurt, frontier architecture was more than just building techniques, it was a reflection of how culture survives change. Norwegian settlers, faced with new landscapes and limited resources, didn’t abandon their traditions, they adapted them. Their homes, though shaped by urgency and practically, still carried the memory of the world they left behind.
